Summer 2015: June 20 - July 29, 2016

ART 568 Children's Book Drawing Fundamentals (4 credits)

Drawing is the most important skill to develop in order to become a working children's book illustrator. This course will ground students in basic drawing skills as they first work on their powers of observation and the craft of drawing in light and shade. Through a variety of class exercises, the students will learn about form, value, texture, quality and styles of line, perspective, drawing architecture and interiors, drawing people, animals, nature, and landscapes. Students will work mainly in graphite pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and colored pencil, and will explore drawing in a variety of styles, using perspective, exaggeration, and learning how to develop their own "signature" style. The drawing styles of a variety of published illustrators will be examined in detail.

Class time will include lectures and demonstrations by the instructor and visiting artists.

More about the Author/Illustrator

Instructor: Lauren Mills
June 25, 2011 / Saturday, 10-4pm
This is a one day intensive workshop studying the anatomy of the skull and features for both the portrait painter and sculptor. We will work in third life size and learn specific proportions and anat
omical nuances critical to understanding rendering the head.
A combination of lecture, demonstration and hands on sculpting, each student will gain great insight to aspects of the human skull and features that are often misrepresented, even by working professionals. We will be working with Klean Klay, a non-toxic plastilene. Small armatures and tools will be provided.

Students may choose to keep the materials for a material cost - $15.
